Housing Trust Fund Workshops

The Housing Trust Fund Project routinely engages in activities beyond the general technical assistance we offer. Current special initiatives of the Housing Trust Fund Project are described below.

National Housing Trust Fund

The Housing Trust Fund Project participates in various activities for the National Housing Trust Fund Campaign, a special campaign of the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC). The National Housing Trust Fund Campaign is a coalition of more than 5000 organizations working to establish a National Housing Trust Fund that would build and preserve 1.5 million units of rental housing for the lowest income families over the next 10 years.

Building on the success of the more than 350 state and local housing trust funds nationwide, the National Housing Trust Fund would:

  • Invest billions of dollars in NEW FEDERAL RESOURCES.
  • Establish an ongoing, permanent DEDICATED source of revenue (a trust fund).
  • BUILD, REHABILITATE and PRESERVE at least 1.5 million units of primarily rental, primarily deeply targeted housing.

The Bay Area Housing Trust Fund Cluster

Created in early 2003, the Bay Area Housing Trust Fund Cluster is comprised of 50 representatives of nearly 30 different member organizations in and around the San Francisco bay area. Supported by the Charles and Helen Schwab Foundation and the Fannie Mae Foundation, this group gathers quarterly each year to discuss all topics relating to housing trust funds. Past topics include:

  • The costs of NOT providing affordable housing, and the basics about economic and other benefits of providing affordable housing. Presentation by Deb Halliday on Lee County, Florida illustrating model examples of how to quantify this information and how to create the foundation for the argument that housing is good for the economy.
  • A special Communications Training, facilitated by Venus Velázquez and Abbi Kaplan, consultants with Pyramid Communications, who specialize in media relations and community-based outreach. The training helps participants hone their messages and strategies to reach community-based goals.
Housing Trust Fund Workshops

Southern Housing Trust Fund Workshop
Atlanta, GA
June 2004

Southwestern Housing Trust Fund Workshop
Albuquerque, NM
April 2005

These workshops, sponsored by a grant from the Fannie Mae Foundation, addressed the needs and concerns of organizations and coalitions considering or pursuing housing trust funds. The purpose of the workshops was to provide educational and technical training in the creation of affordable housing trust funds. The workshops presented an opportunity for housing advocates to learn about the basics of creating a housing trust fund as well as a time to exchange information with others in the region also interested in housing trust funds.

Included in the two workshops were key presentations from CCC staff and presentations and insights from local leaders in the select regions that have implemented affordable housing trust funds in their communities. There was also ample time for discussion and questions.
