ACORN
A nationwide, multi-issue community organizing group, ACORN has established
affiliates in over 27 states. Local and national campaigns have focused on such
areas as community reinvestment, jobs and income, and school reform. To increase
the impact of its membership, ACORN has created several support arms. The ACORN
Housing Corporation serves as a national back-up to local ACORN chapters, providing
development expertise to those chapters that move from organizing to development.

Institution
A research think tank, established the Center on Urban and Metropolitan Policy.
The Center seeks to shape a new generation of urban policies that will help
build strong neighborhoods, cities, and metropolitan regions. It aims to conduct
independent research, policy analysis and strategic outreach.

The Center focuses on federal and state level fiscal policy and public programs

Foundation
A national, nonprofit housing and community development organization located
in Columbia, Maryland, Enterprise has field offices in a number of cities, including
Columbus, Ohio; Denver, Colorado; Los Angeles, California; Miami, Florida; Portland,
Oregon and New York, New York. Enterprise works through its network of community-based
nonprofit organizations and provides a series of useful journals and Best-Practices

Assistance Council (HAC)
A national nonprofit corporation that provides financing, technical assistance,
and program and policy analysis to public and private nonprofit organizations
concerned about affordable housing for low-income people in rural America.
Institute
for the Study of Homelessness & Poverty
The Institute for the Study of Homelessness and Poverty, a project of the Weingart
Center, is a non-profit, non-partisan, research and policy organization serving
the research and networking needs of academics, government, community-based
direct service agencies, policy advocacy organizations, the media, philanthropic
organizations, policymakers and other members of the community involved with
the issues of homelessness and poverty.
Local Initiatives
Support Corporation, LISC
A national intermediary that channels resources to urban neighborhoods and rural
towns. It has three affiliated organizations that work to attract private capital
for CDCs: The National Equity Fund, the Local Initiatives Managed Assets Corporation,
and the Retail Initiative. Several years ago, LISC established Rural LISC, an
initiative focusing financial and technical resources on rural CDCs. LISC has
offices in many cities, including Newark, New Jersey; New York City; Chicago,
Illinois; Boston, Massachusetts; Twin Cities, Minnesota; Los Angeles; Detroit,
Michigan; Greater Miami, Florida; Kansas City, Kansas and Missouri, etc.
National Housing
Conference
The National Housing Conference (NHC) is a nonprofit membership association
dedicated to advancing affordable housing and community development causes.
NHC members consist of nationally known experts in affordable housing and housing
finance. NHC serves as a clearinghouse for unbiased, nonpartisan information
on housing and housing related concerns and broadens the constituency base of
those actively involved in the fight for quality affordable housing.

Housing Trust (NHT)
A national nonprofit dedicated to the preservation of existing affordable housing
that focuses on multifamily housing assisted, owned or controlled by a federal
agency. The Trust offers consulting services to local housing agencies, nonprofits,
community development corporations, and low-income residents. The Trust is the
convener of the National Preservation Working Group, a network of residents,
technical assistance providers, state and local housing agencies, and nonprofits
who are interested in acquiring and preserving federally assisted housing throughout
the U.S.

Housing Trust Fund Campaign
A special campaign of the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC), the
National Housing Trust Fund Campaign is a coalition of more than 5000 organizations
working to establish a National Housing Trust Fund that would build and preserve
1.5 million units of rental housing for the lowest income families over the
next 10 years.

Low-Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC)
A national membership organization that is committed to organizing and advocating
to ensure decent, affordable housing within healthy neighborhoods for everyone.
The Coalition provides up-to-date information, formulates policy, and educates
the public on housing needs and the strategies for solutions. This action network
publishes a weekly "Memo to Members" on housing issues, and assists
statewide housing coalitions to increase their capacity for community building
and resource development.

Neighborhood Coalition (NNC)
A information and educational clearinghouse on national public policies and
federal programs that affect neighborhoods and their low- and moderate-income
residents. NNC focuses on low-income housing, community-based development, community
reinvestment banking, citizen participation, and community organizing.
Neighborhood
Reinvestment Corporation (NRC)
NRC works with residents, government, and business leaders to develop strong
partnerships that revitalize America's urban and rural communities and make
housing affordable. These partnership organizations, comprising NeighborWorks®
networks, are located throughout the country. In addition, NRC holds a series
of regional training institutes with courses on community and economic development,
affordable housing development and management, and community develop lending.

Communities Initiatives of The Annie E. Casey Foundation
Rebuilding Communities provides the support needed to help transform troubled,

The National Housing Institute
The Journal of Affordable Housing and Community Building, Shelterforce, is published
by the National Housing Institute. Online issues are available from 1994 to
the present.
U.S. Department
of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
Federal agency responsible for national policy and programs that address America's
housing needs and enforce fair housing laws. HUD runs a series of programs aimed
at helping to create a decent home for all Americans.

Properties Campaign of Smart Growth America
The campaign seeks to make vacant properties a priority for revitalization in
communities. The campaign includes a national network of leaders and experts,
tools for communities, and technical assistance and training.
