Acknowledging and Respecting the Human Dignity of Immigrants
I believe that the debate on immigration reform in Arizona has become both toxic and destructive. Rather than creating the space to find rational solutions that address the reality of daily life in Arizona, too many of our leaders have taken the path of the politics of fear, and in the process they have dehumanized immigrants - our neighbors, friends, co-workers and family members.
It is not too late to restore civility, humanity and dignity to the policy debate on immigration in Arizona. It is not too late to remind ourselves that when we are talking about undocumented immigrants in Arizona, we are talking about men, women and children. It is not too late to remember that most policy proposals being considered in Arizona - including four propositions on the November ballot - would do nothing to discourage migration into the United States, but may do real harm to vulnerable families already living here.
Therefore, I pledge to:
- Reject the politics of fear and hate that equate migrants to criminals and terrorists
- Acknowledge the humanity, dignity and contributions of immigrants in Arizona
- Support rational and compassionate solutions to the immigration issue
- Vote NO on propositions 100, 102, 103 and 300
