About Proposition 103

Prop 103 would needlessly make English the state's official language making it more difficult for non-English speakers to contribute to society and better themselves.

Prop. 103: NO

10/22/06 | Arizona Daily Star

English as official language

This measure would amend the state constitution to make English the official state language and require that state business be conducted in English.

If this proposition sounds familiar, that's because it is. In 1988, voters approved a similar measure that made English the official language of Arizona. Ten years later, that amendment was ruled unconstitutional.

Arizona doesn't need to go down the same road again.

Official business in Arizona is already conducted in English, so this measure is useless. Businesses that care about their customers make information available in multiple languages. A state that cares about its citizens should continue to do the same.

If passed, Prop. 103 would lead to new lawsuits that will be a burden to taxpayers.

As a border state and a home to Indian tribes, Arizona has a rich tradition of using and celebrating multiple languages. We should embrace this tradition and not discriminate against members of our community who conduct official business in a languages other than English.

Learning to speak English should be encouraged to promote assimilation. Providing materials in another language will encourage individuals to become fully contributing members of our economy and society.
