Anti-Immigrant Propositions Pass

Submitted by rich on 8 November 2006 - 1:40pm.

Slipping into the late hours of Tuesday night, it looks like Arizona voters will approve Propositions 100, 102, 103 and 300 by significant margins. While disappointed in the election results, we're eager to compare the voter turnout with the work we've done in southern Arizona. We'll have a summary of our analysis available in coming days. We're proud of our canvassers and volunteers who put a ton of passion and work into this campaign. We're proud of our program. Perhaps more time and more resources could have made a greater difference, but we know we had an impact on the final results in our targeted precincts. Click here for the results.

More than anything else, the results demonstrated how important it was for us to be here in Arizona boldly confronting the anti-immigrant movement in the United States. We took a public stand in a hostile environment and served as a critical voice in support of our neighbors, relatives, friends and co-workers. And we're not stopping here.

I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the work of numerous organizations that conducted their own activities educating voters on the potential impacts of these propositions in southern Arizona: Pima County Interfaith Council, Mi Familia Vota, Democracia USA, Urban League Young Professionals, Derechos Humanos, Border Action Network, the Arizona Coalition for Migrant Rights, numerous African American churches, and many more. Thank you for your work! There's much more to do.
